10/6/2008 12:00:00 AM ... Columbus, Ohio (October 6, 2008) — Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, today announced a number of changes to its infrastructure management and assessment services to improve data center modeling and management. Specifically, Emerson Network Power is collaborating with Future Facilities to advance virtual prototyping of data centers and is integrating the company’s 6SigmaDC computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools with the Aperture VISTA infrastructure management system. Emerson Network Power is also expanding the Liebert Data Center Assessment service globally.
“These developments support our strategy to aggressively develop more sophisticated tools and services to help global businesses manage the increasing complexity of their data center infrastructure,” said Fred Stack, vice president of marketing, Liebert Precision Cooling, Emerson Network Power. “The need for capital and operational cost analytical tools, and energy efficiency metrics for the power, cooling and space dimensions of facilities continues to grow in importance and Emerson Network Power is taking steps to address these needs.”
Through the agreement with Future Facilities, the two organizations will leverage Emerson Network Power’s data center experience and expertise together with Future Facilities’ technology in order to advance virtual data center prototyping. Virtual prototyping creates a single, holistic 3D view of the data center that can be used to simulate the environmental impact of equipment loads prior to installation to reduce risk and cost.
“Virtual prototyping is a required practice for the proper design of most mission-critical products from airplanes to medical MRI systems,” said Stack. “With the levels of equipment density and complexity being demanded in modern data center facilities, it is not only appropriate but almost compulsory to extend the same design paradigm from chip to enclosure, and to rack and room.”
The Future Facilities 6SigmaDC CFD tool will utilize customer-maintained asset management inventory files from the Aperture VISTA infrastructure management system; thus, allowing easier CFD model updates. This integration enhances the ability to periodically resolve the CFD solution to determine the thermal implication of changes to the room.
“The increase in rack densities combined with the cost of energy has forced senior-level executives within the IT organization to address infrastructure management,” said Steve Yellen, vice president of marketing, Aperture, an Emerson Network Power business. “Our efforts with Future Facilities will improve the ability of IT professionals to economically verify the effectiveness of their cooling systems in an operational data center.”
In addition, Emerson Network Power is introducing its Liebert Data Center Assessment Services in Europe, China, India and other key centers in Asia Pacific. The Liebert Data Center Assessment Service, originally launched in North America, combines electrical and mechanical assessments to identify and resolve vulnerabilities that threaten availability, increase data center efficiency and improve planning. This service is supported by Liebert Services, the industry’s largest global service organization.
