New Liebert Cooling Product Simplifies Server Upgrade Process 7/30/2008 12:00:00 AM ...

Liebert Challenger ITR provides energy efficient cooling directly to data center rows

Columbus, Ohio (July 29, 2008) — As data center temperatures continue to rise and available space on raised floors grows smaller, Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, has unveiled a new Liebert cooling system that can be easily positioned next to equipment racks to deliver focused cooling within the rack row.

The Liebert Challenger ITR, which has capacity to cool up to a nominal 23 kW or 33 kW, is a horizontal-flow unit designed for installation within rows of racks in data centers. The unit can be placed anywhere within the row where cooling is needed, and the horizontal airflow pattern enables the unit to be placed on both raised and non-raised floors. The unit’s 91-inch height allows it to be installed in computer rooms or network closets with low ceilings or hanging cabling. And at 43 inches deep, the unit aligns seamlessly with a row of racks.

Based on the proven cooling platform of the Liebert Challenger 3000, the Liebert Challenger ITR provides complete environmental control including cooling, reheat, dehumidification, humidification and filtration. The system is available in self-contained or split system designs, which enable the unit to be fitted with a variety of architectures. Cooling configurations include air, water, glycol, GLYCOOL and chilled water.

The unit’s scroll compressor and microprocessor control system work together to operate at maximum energy efficiency. The energy-efficient GLYCOOL free-cooling configuration allows the system to take advantage of cooler outdoor temperatures to reduce or eliminate compressor runtime.

“Today’s dense, high-speed computing technologies offer significant advantages, but data center managers often fail to anticipate the impact they will have on cooling demand,” said Dave Larson, product manager, Liebert Precision Cooling, Emerson Network Power. “The Liebert Challenger ITR is designed to deliver cooling where it’s needed the most — in the row of dense rack equipment at the source of the heat — to enable data center managers to deploy their virtualized servers or VoIP capabilities without fear of downtime caused by overheating.”

Key Liebert Challenger ITR features include:

  • High-efficiency scroll compressor that allows for continual and precise adjustments in cooling, resulting in lower energy costs.
  • Rapid response, precise humidity controls to maintain humidity levels required by sensitive electronics.
  • Front and rear access that minimizes footprint while allowing ample room for service.
  • Durable components designed for 24/7 operation.
  • Operation at 85dBA—the quietest operation of any row-based cooling system.
